Nixie Clock WiFi Setup Without an App — Does It Need the Cloud?

Direct answer WiFi-enabled models need a one-time WiFi setup step so the board can reach an NTP time server, and periodically afterward to keep that time synced. Beyond that initial setup and the occasional time sync, a WiFi clock is not generally designed to depend on an active internet connection just to keep displaying time. The exact setup flow (captive portal, companion app, or on-board web page) and whether there's any ongoing connection beyond NTP and firmware-update checks still needs confirming for the specific models sold here — see the note further down this page.

What WiFi is actually used for on these clocks

Commonly, a WiFi-enabled clock in this category uses its network connection for two things: syncing accurate time from an NTP (Network Time Protocol) server, which is what lets it stay accurate to the second indefinitely rather than drifting like a standalone RTC, and checking for firmware updates over the air. That's a general pattern for this type of device rather than a confirmed feature list for every model sold on this site — the specifics for each board revision are noted below.

Setup flow

Whether initial setup is done via a captive portal the board itself broadcasts, a companion phone app, or a web configuration page, and whether a companion app is required at all versus optional, is model-specific detail that isn't yet written up on this page.

From the workshop — needs your input before publishing

[Ian: this page needs the real details before it goes live — (1) is initial WiFi setup done via a captive portal, a companion app, or a web config page served by the board itself, (2) does the device call out to any TSM/third-party server for anything beyond NTP time sync and firmware update checks, (3) can someone use the clock fully offline (accepting drift) if they never complete WiFi setup, (4) is there a companion app at all, and if so is it required or optional. This is a real pre-purchase objection for privacy-conscious buyers and worth getting exactly right rather than guessed.]

Ongoing network dependency

For most designs in this category, once initial setup is complete the clock only needs to reach the internet briefly and periodically for a time sync, not continuously. Whether these specific models can run fully offline after setup (accepting gradual drift on their onboard clock), and whether any data beyond an NTP request ever leaves the device, is covered in the workshop note above and will be filled in with confirmed specifics before this guide is considered final.
